Award Winning Gal

Last Wednesday night was the Junior High's Awards Night. We were invited and told that Syd would receive an award. She got one for Reflections, which she already knew about. But she also received an award for her IOWA test results. These are National Standardized Tests taken in the 3rd, 5th, and 8th grades. Sydni was above the 90th percentile in Math, Reading, Science, Social Studies, Total Core, and Total Composite Score. That's across the whole country - what a smartie!

Memorial Day

Wow - it has been a very busy few weeks. Maybe that's why I enjoyed Memorial Day so much - It was a laid back day that I got to spend with my family. We needed that!
We started the day with a Stake Breakfast and then headed out to visit some grave sites. Don's grandparents are all buried on the east side of the valley, so we headed over there to take some flowers and clean up the headstones. The weather was beautiful and Don got to share some stories of Grandma Margaret, Grandpa Vernon, Grandma Cherry, and Grandpa Don.Last year we went to the zoo, so we thought we'd make it a tradition. Once we drove up and saw more people there then I've ever seen before we changed plans and headed home for a relaxing afternoon. That evening we had our good friends, the Webbs and Powells, over for a bbq. The weather was perfect, the food was great, the kids all got along, and we had a great time. It was hard to return to "real life" on Tuesday.

It's Planted!

Saturday was a yard work day and we ended the day with our garden planted. I'm wondering how we can clean out all the rocks every year and have so many more the next year. Anybody?
We decided to do zuchinni, yellow-crookneck, cucumbers, and carrots from seed this year. Last year half of our plants died and when I replanted seeds they did great. Here's hoping it works again. We did do tomatoes from starts, though.
We need to pick up a few more of the white edging pieces. I'm hoping they will deter Britton from walking through, or digging in, the garden.
Sydni and Kenzie are going to take care of the garden this year as their "Faith" value project, so I will have good help! I'm so excited to have fresh tomatoes and squash in a couple of months!

Spelling Bee

Both Emma and Kenzie got to represent their classes in the school Spelling Bee this year. It was fun to watch them study together and encourage each other. There were about 35 participants this year, and Emma lasted about halfway. She missed the word "permanent," spelling it "-ant." She was disappointed because she had studied that word, but nerves got the better of her. Kenzie ended up tied for third place and was very excited. She missed the word "prestigious," spelling it "-eous." The word she got in the previous round was "utilitarian" and all the kids in the audience gasped when they heard it. I guess it sounds like a hard word, but Kenz aced it. We're so proud of both those cute girls!

His First Buzz

I picked out the 1/2 inch for the top of his head and the 1/4 inch for the back and sides. Guess who wasn't paying attention when she started cutting Britton's hair? Well, he's ready for summer now!
